GXINE Player (XINE)
xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from local disk drives

Ubuntu DVD Gxine (XINE) Install
Ubuntu comes with Totem DVD Player, but will not play by default since plug-ins are needed. And there so many things to download and install, just to get a DVD to play.
I tried them all, and was successful, but they are not for the beginner. So here is the Gxine player that is easy to install for the beginner, or the savy.
Open System on the Panel,
Select Administration,
Select Synaptic Package Manager.
On the menu at the top, Select Settings, and select Repositories,
Select the Add Button and make sure
Community Maintained (Universe) is selected.
Select Reload
Now Search for Xine in the search box
Double click on Gxine and Gxineplugin
Select Apply.
Close the manager after install is complete
Go to Applications on the Panel
Sound and Video
Select Gxine Movie Player
Now Play your DVD
